[Class 46] A filter comprises a chamber containing one or more tubular filter elements, each mounted on an apertured tube through which filtered liquid is discharged, the element being held against a flange on the tube by means which includes a rod extending into the tube and capable of axial movement relatively thereto and clamping means co-operating with the free end of the rod. In the construction shown, a cylindrical chamber 1 is provided with a bottom wall 2 and a false bottom 4 through which extend tubes 14 carrying cylindrical filter elements. Each tube 14 has a flange 16 supporting a filter element 17 which is separated from another element 17a by a disc 21. The two elements are clamped between the flange 16 and a plate 22 by means of a nut 20 screwed on the end of a rod 19. The rod extends through an apertured plug 18 secured to the tube 14 and at its lower end is secured to a plunger 31 provided with a slot 32. A pin 33 extends transversely through the slot and through the tube 14. A coil spring 34 between the plug 18 and the plunger 31 urges the rod 19 toward the tube 14. Liquid to be filtered enters the chamber 1 through inlet 13 and after passing through the filter elements enters the tubes 14 through perforations 24 and is discharged through perforations 25 and an outlet 6. Sludge is removed through an outlet 7. The filter elements consist each of an inner tubular portion 27 of cellulosic filtering material, an intermediate portion 28 of bauxite or similar material and an outer portion 29 of cellulosic material. Each element may be reinforced by an inner tube of perforated metal and may be encased in an open mesh fabric.</p> |
