A method of drawing sheet glass vertically from a surface of a body of molten glass in a drawing kiln 10 in which glass flows from a melting tank 12, the flow being controlled by a submerged fluid cooled pipe 32. The fluid is preferably water. Separate atmospheres are maintained in the tank and kiln. The seal may be provided by a curtain 36 and means 34 for discharging air towards the molten glass in the tank. Alternatively the seal may comprise a double wall 40 extending towards the molten glass and spaced to provide a conduit 42 for the passage of air. The pressure in the melting tank 12 is' generally maintained' above ambient pressure and the pressure in the kiln 10 below ambient pressure. The pipe 32 may be constructed of stainless steel.</p> |
