The airbag module assembled of the folded bag (6) and the gas generator (32) is positioned close to the c-strut of the vehicle and in a space (30) between the roof (10) and a cover unit (4,22). The cover unit includes a part of the ceiling cover (26,28) and a part of the lateral cover (40) provided with a step (24) for the accommodation of the bent lower edge of the ceiling cover (22). When the airbag (6) is activated in case of a crash the unit extends into the passenger cabin (18) through a gap formed between the step (24) and the bent lower end. The lateral cover (4,40) is moved towards the wall (8).
