A cigarette packaging machine includes holders 14 for cigarette batches moving continuously, in an endless path, hollow mandrels31, about which a packet 32 is formed, moving in a second path coinciding with part of that of the holders, and further holders 47 moving along a third path coinciding in part with the second path into which packets and contained batches of cigaretts are thrust by rams moving through the mandrels. Cigarette batches are fed from stationary magazines 17 into the holders 14, the means for achieving this being as described in Specification 1,200,198. The holders are mounted on a continuously moving conveyer 12 which aligns them with the series of hollow mandrels 31 on a rotating turret. Each mandrel has a packet and wrapper 32 folded successively upon it by means 34, 35, 38, 39 (not detailed) before a holder is aligned with it. The turret carries an axiallyreciprocable ram aligned with each mandrel and the rams successively advance to form a temporary bottom closure for the respective mandrel during packet formation. They then withdraw beyond the path of the holders 14 and again advance to sweep the batches into and through the mandrels. The batches carry the packets with them into the holders 47 the latter being carried on a conveyer 48 past end closure means (not detailed). |
