In a gas-scrubber gas enters tangentially at 10 flows downwardly onto the surface of a body of liquid and a mixture of gas and liquid passes upwardly through a bed of lightweight balls disposed between grids 2 and 3 in a tube 1 to an outlet 12. A plurality of tubes 1 may be provided within a single casing. In a modification gas passes downwardly through a central tube and the mixture of gas and liquid passes upwardly through a bed of lightweight balls disposed in an annular space between the tube and a casing.
