Data signals are transmitted during a slot of duration T1 (fig. 5A) in accordance with initial modulation and encoding parameters. In response to a predefined event e.g. deterioration in reception quality, at least one of the parameters is adjusted so as to transmit data signals in a subsequent transmission cycle during a slot of duration T2 (fig. 5B), wherein T2 < T1, i.e. the transmission rate is increased. Predefined signals are sent during the remaining time duration T1-T2 of the subsequent cycle, the predefined signals enabling the receiver to modify reception parameters with a view to improving reception quality, e.g. changing the pointing direction of a reception antenna or switching to another channel or path. The transmission may then revert back to the initial transmission parameters. In this way reception quality can be improved without affecting data transmission. Application is to a Wireless Personal Area Network (WPAN). |
