A spool valve of which the housing 1, 2 and spool 4 are made of a material such as aluminium and are surface hardened and finished to operate with a very fine clearance for controlling air or gases without the use of sealing means, is provided with a cover 3 designed to protect the valve against external forces which might distort and thereby hinder the working of the valve. The cover 3 is made of a softer aluminium than that of the valve body. As shown, it has a rectangular top with vertically depending sides 43 which protect the body 2. The top and sides are joined by integral block-like portions 44. The body fits on to a manifold block 1 and engages this block through a three-point contact 16, 17, 18 corresponding to a triangular formation of securing bolts 19, 20, 21. The cover similarly has a three-point contact with the body at the bolt positions. The valve is operated by a solenoid (26), Figs. 2-4 (not shown), End covers (28, 36) have holes (39, 40) to permit manipulation by a tool.</p> |
