Electrostatic charging apparatus has electrodes 30 positioned between a backing electrode 31, Fig. 2, and a conductive support 33 for a sheet 25 to be charged. A D. C. source 15, Fig.1, e.g., supplying -9KV. is connected to electrode wires 13, while backing electrode 14 is connected to an intermediate potential, e.g. -2À6KV. and support 11 is earthed. The potentials applied to the wires 13 and backing electrode 14 establishes a generally uniform field to cause ions to be spread evenly over the surface of material 10. The wires are preferably spaced less than ¢ an inch apart. The electrode 3, Fig. 2, can be mounted so as to be formed of a single wire diagonal to the edges of sheet 25.
