1,209,249. Fuel cell. UNITED AIRCRAFT CORP. 20 Dec., 1968 [27 Dec., 1967], No. 60825/68. Heading H1B. [Also in Division C7] An anode for an alkaline electrolyte fuel cell comprises a conductive screen e.g. nickel having a sintered catalytic coating consisting of by weight 65-95% powder of an alloy of nickel with Pd or Pt in an amount not exceeding 5% weight of the alloy, and 5-35% of an inert hydrophobic binder, the alloy being dispersed throughout the binder. The preferred hydrophobic material is polytetrafluoroethylene but other fluorocarbon polymers such as those of trifluorochloroethylene, fluorinated propylene, vinylfluoride, vinylidine fluoride and copolymers thereof can be used with alkali metal hydroxides of K, Na, Cs and Rb. Pt, Ni-Pt, Ag and Au may also be used to make the conductive screen. The alloy is prepared by the room temperature reduction of nickel and Pd or Pt salts with hydrazine in an alkaline solution. A thin controlled oxide film is formed on the powders before applying to the screen to form the electrode. A slurry of the powders and the binder is sprayed or filtered on to the conductive screen which is then dried and sintered in a nitrogen atmosphere. |
