The polyesters are made by transesterification of terephthalic acid esters with (A) C2-14 dialcohols or mixture with polyfunctional alcohols; (B) C4-16 satd. or unsatd. dicarboxylic acids; (C) C6-25 satd. or unsatd. mono carboxylic acids; (D) polymers (I) contg. free carboxyl groups. (I) may be a copolymer of C2-9 alpha-olefins or vinyl monomers with carboxyl monomers, (styrene/maleic anhydride of 1:1 to 8:1) of mol.wt. 400-3,000. The polyesters may be used in mixtures with other resins for paints and surface coatings, and have better hardness, mechanical strength and elasticity than known polyesters modified with fatty acids, esp. those of high styrene content.
