[Also in Division F2] A gas release valve for a breathing apparatus comprises an elastic balloon 70, Fig. 5, 80 Fig. 11, supporting means for the balloon 58, 76 wherein the supporting means or a member 84, Fig. 11, positioned internally of the balloon and connected to the supporting means has at least one groove or opening 60, 90 which the balloon itself sealingly closes in its deflated position and which is opened to release gas from the balloon at a predetermined degree of expansion of the balloon. The expanded position of the balloon is indicated by broken lines and the direction of escape of gas by chain dotted arrows in the figures. Alternative cross sections of the supporting member and the corresponding shapes of the neck of the balloon are disclosed (Figs. 7, 7a, 8, 9, 10, not shown). A spring loaded concave plunger (94, Fig. 13 not shown) may delay the lifting of the balloon 80 from the gas release openings 90. A shield 92, Fig. 11, may restrict lateral expansion of the balloon 80 so that the balloon lifts earlier from the openings 90. The valve is disclosed as part of a closed circuit breathing apparatus including an inhalation valve (20) and a carbon dioxide absorber (16) (Figs. 14, 15 not shown). Prior art closed circuit breathing apparatus (Figs. 1-3, not shown) and a bellows operated gas release valve (34, Fig. 4, not shown) are also described. |
