<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a washing and drying machine capable of efficiently deodorizing and sterilizing laundry in a short time while reducing a manufacturing cost and a running cost and performing miniaturization. <P>SOLUTION: Positive/negative ions generated by an ion generator 42 are discharged to circulating air sucked out from the inside of a drum 22 by blowing air by a blower 41, and the circulating air containing the positive/negative ions is directly blowing into the drum 22. Further, steam generated by heating tap water in a steam generation part is directly blown into the drum 22 without depending on the blower by utilizing the steam pressure of the steam itself. Thus, the circulating air containing a large amount of the positive/negative ions and the steam at a high temperature are directly blown to the laundries L, L, ... housed in the drum 22. Thus, a bad-smelling substance stuck to the laundries L, L, ... is evaporated and decomposed in a short time.
