1,216,456. Selective hydrogenation. ENGLEHARD MINERALS & CHEMICALS CORP. 16 April, 1969 [17 April, 1968], No. 19530/69. Heading C5E. Hydrocarbon streams containing hydrocarbons of different degrees of saturation are subjected to selective hydrogenation of the more unsaturated hydrocarbon(s) in the presence of a catalyst comprising a Group VIII metal supported on a unitary ceramic honeycomb type support, at a VHSV of 50,000- 4,000,000 and an actual linear velocity of 0À5-50 metres/second. The Group VIII metal may be Ni, Pt, Pd or Pd promoted with Rh, Ru, Au, Ag, Cu or Fe, and the support may also have an activated refractory oxide, e.g. alumina, deposited thereon. The process is particularly applicable to (1) removal of acetylene from ethylene streams, in which case the above process may form the first stage of a two-stage process, the second stage using as catalyst Pd on a particulate support; (2) removal of methyl acetylene (and possibly allene) from propylene streams; and (3) removing acetylenes from butadiene streams, for which Ni catalysts are particularly suitable. |
