(A) Cmpds. of (I) - where R1 and R2 = H or alkyl, and Ar = thienyl, furyl, pyrrolyl, pyridyl, or where R3, R4 and R5 = H, Hal (1-4C) alkyl, (1-4C)O-alkyl, (1-4C) S alkyl, OH, NO2, NH2, or (2-8C) N (alkyl)2. - (B) Salts of (I). - Diuretics and sodiouretics, with little anti-folic acid activity. - 2,4-Diamino-5-pyrimidinecarbonaldehyde (2.07g.) and PhCH2 CN (1.76 g.), were refluxed 2 hr. in a soln. of sodium 2-ethoxyethanolate (0.14 g. Na in 60 ml. EtOCH2CH2OH), cooled, and filtered. The crude product was dissolved in DMF (100 ml.) and AcOH (20 ml.), charcoaled, filtered, basified with c.NH4OH (40 ml.) in DMF (100 ml.), dild. with H2O, filtered, and dried, giving (I), as the free base, m.p. 317-8 deg., (I) - 1/2 H2SO4 m.p. 229-231 deg.
