PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress the occurrence of a trouble with unintended opening of at least one of an intake valve and an exhaust valve caused by receiving the force of negative pressure produced in a combustion chamber, when performing control to set a valve opening timing for the intake valve behind a top dead center.SOLUTION: An ECU 0 as a control device controls an internal combustion engine which includes a VVT 6 as a variable valve timing mechanism for thrusting an intake valve 35 and an exhaust valve 40 energized by valve springs via cams provided on cam shafts 63, 64 to open the valves, and for enabling a valve opening timing for the intake valve 35 to be set behind an exhaust top dead center. When setting the valve opening timing for the intake valve 35 as a target value behind the exhaust top dead center, if a difference mbetween a value mfor a control signal m input to the VVT 6 corresponding to an estimated target value and an actual value for the control signal m input to the VVT 6 exceeds a predetermined value &Dgr;m, the ECU 0 detects that the intake valve 35 is opened by the negative pressure in the combustion chamber. |
