[Also in Division H2] A deformable strain wave type gear includes a first element having a contact surface which is a ruled surface generated by moving a straight line in a first locus, and a second element having a contact surface which is an envelope generated by moving said ruled surface in a second locus about a principal axis, with its axis skew relative to the principal axis and at a fixed distance therefrom. As shown, an electric motor having a stator 2 and an armature 1 drives an output shaft 8 via a strain wave reduction gear. Frustoconical rollers 6 on the armature press straight or helical teeth 4 on a deformable member 3 (the second element) into mesh with bevel teeth 4<SP>1</SP> on fixed rings 5 (the first element. The member 3 is secured to the output shaft 8 and the rings 5 are axially adjustable. The teeth 4, 4<SP>1</SP> may be of triangular or sinusoidal profile. In a modification, the gear elements engage frictionally. The ruled surface may be a cone, a cylinder, or a hyperboloid.
