Alkyl acrylates are prepared in a continuous process by reacting acrylic acid with alkyl sulphates or alkyl aryl sulphonates (2-4 C in the alkyl moiety and 6-8 C in the aryl moiety) in the liquid phase in a pipe reactor with a residence time of 10 seconds to 20 minutes, at 150‹ to 220‹ C. and under 2-15 Kg/cm<SP>2</SP> gauge pressure. A ratio of length to inside diameter of above 10: 1 for the pipe reactor is preferred, and polymerization inhibitors may be present. The sulphates and sulphonates may be obtained by absorbing olefines in the acid and a solvent e.g. carbon tetrachloride or cyclohexane may be used. Ethyl, propyl, butyl, and isobutyl acrylates are prepared. |
