The testing device (20) has a wheel influencing unit to exert the wheel influencing effect on the contact of the rail unit (22) placed on test wheel set (10) so that the effective contact surfaces transfer the force of the test wheels (12,14) of the test wheel set to the rail unit. A test wheel set position detection unit provides the position data relating to the position of the test wheel set and determines effective contact surfaces between test wheel set and rail unit based on the virtual map and the position data. An independent claim is included for a method for determining effective contact surface between test wheel set and rail unit for rail vehicle.
