The device (1) has a heat radiator for roasting a plant roasting material (2) i.e. cocoa beans (2.1), in a roasting unit, where the roasting material is transported on a plane. Two mutually opposite grids are formed as grid plates (7.1, 7.2) and accommodate the roasting material in a grid plate drive slot (6) as the plane. The grids move the roasting material in a rolling motion through the drive slot by a reciprocating stroke movement of the plates to each other. One of the plates roasts the roasting material with the movement through the drive slot, which comprises a vertical alignment. The heat radiator is formed as a medium wave infrared radiator, a gas heater or a gas infrared heating element.
