PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an output image equivalent to an image obtained by monochrome conversion directly from a color image, even when compression data obtained by performing representative color compression of the color image is subjected to monochrome conversion.SOLUTION: An image processing apparatus performs representative color compression including the steps of dividing an input image into a plurality of blocks, extracting a representative color from each of the plurality of blocks, and allocating each pixel in the block to any of the extracted representative color and compressing the representative colors. The image processing apparatus generates color compression data by performing representative color compression to a color input image, and generates first monochrome compression data by subjecting the representative colors extracted in the generation process of the color compression data to monochrome conversion and second monochrome compression data by subjecting the color input image to monochrome conversion and then performing representative color compression. The image processing apparatus further compares the first monochrome compression data and the second monochrome compression data to generate difference data, and performs processing to output the color compression data and the difference data. |
