<p>An aliphatic alcohol is reacted in vapour phase with at least one phenol of general formula (where R is H, alkyl or opt. alkylated phenyl) in the presence as catalyst of MgO bonded with SiO2. Pref. alcohol is CH3OH pref. phenol is phenol and/or o-cresol and catalyst bed is pref. at is not 400 degrees C. The catalyst may contain 1-15%, esp. 2-6%, SiO2 of surface is not 20m2/g. and may be prepd. by stirring a mixture of MgO and SiO2 with an equal amount of water then calcining the shaped mixture at 148.9 degrees C.</p> |
