The invention relates to the production of cycloalkanols and cycloalkanones by the continuous hydrogenation of cycloalkane hydroperoxides in cycloalkane solution with the aid of a catalyst comprising a Group VIII metal deposited on an inert support. According to the invention, the process is so effected that the hydroperoxide solution first contacts a part of the support containing sufficient catalyst to permit substantially complete hydrogenation and then contacts a second part of the support containing no catalyst or insufficient catalyst. It is found that the catalyst migrates during the process from the first part of the support to the second part and that, by periodically interchanging the two parts, the process may be continued practically indefinitely. An example describes the hydrogenation of cyclohexane hydroperoxide in apparatus in which the support is arranged in three sections each separated by a distributer plate, the first or catalyst-rich section becoming the third section after an appropriate time. |
