[Also in Divisions B5 and Dl] A fibrous structure comprises a number of particles 1 of a fibrous texture with the fibres of these particles being meshed together to constitute a network in which the fibres are capable of relative movement, are relatively orientated to ensure the properties of the particles are isotropic and are relatively located so that the particles are porous light, flexible and elastic. The fibrous particles are interconnected by a agent (2) and a coating 4 applied to the surface adhering thereto by penetrating the interstitial spaces 5 between the particles at the surface of the body, see also Fig. 1, not shown. The bonding agent may completely fill the interstitial spaces and/or may adhere only on the surface of the particles. The bonding agent may be flexible and can be applied in the form of a paste. The fibres of the particles can be natural or synthetic. The particles can be selected to be of a uniform or differing size. The particles can be mixed with free fibres, bonding agents, fillers and colouring agents. The particles can be formed by cutting up fibre sheets, coiling or twisting wires or strips, grinding fibre pastes in a liquid or pasty medium or by extrusion, or as described in French Patent 1,422,835. The particles can be spherical, cylindrical or in the form of lozenges or plates. A surface coating 3 of paper, plastics, metal, metal alloy can be applied to the particles or between layers of particles. |
