PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface modification method for a vulcanized rubber or a thermoplastic elastomer, by which excellent slidability and durability against repetition of sliding can be imparted while maintaining sealing property without using an expensive resin having self-lubricating property.SOLUTION: The surface modification method aims modification of a vulcanized rubber or a thermoplastic elastomer as a target substance, and the method includes: a step 1 of forming a sulfur-containing polymerization initiation point on a surface of the modification target substance; and a step 2 of radically polymerizing monomers starting from the sulfur-containing polymerization initiation point to grow a polymer chain on the surface of the modification target substance. |
