PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To stabilize the selection result of a subject area.SOLUTION: The imaging apparatus includes: extraction means (21) for extracting multiple subject candidate areas on the basis of multiple kinds of extraction criteria from each one of multiple frames to be successively generated by an imaging element; evaluation means (22) for evaluating a subject personality with respect to each one of multiple subject candidate areas extracted by the extraction means; generation means (23) for generating an evaluation history by storing the kinds of extraction criteria of subject candidate areas that are highly evaluated by the evaluation means over at least a predetermined frame cycle; and selection means (24) for selecting the subject area of a present frame on the basis of the result of evaluation related to the present frame and the evaluation history related to past frames.
