The control means divides the area 40 into a plurality of divided areas I, II, III, and IV in the rectangular direction to a direction of the phase difference, adds output signals of a plurality of pixels x arranged in a line in the rectangular direction within each divided area to each of a plurality of pixels x arrayed in a phase difference detection direction within the divided area, performs similar addition for pixels y and operates a correlation between a signal resulting from addition for pixels x and a signal resulting from addition for pixels y for each divided area to obtain an evaluation curve, subjects the evaluation curve calculated for each divided area to prescribed operation processing to obtain an evaluation curve for the entire area, and obtains the amount of phase difference from the evaluation curve for the entire area.
