摘要 Controlling network access in a multi-mode device, adapted for operation in multiple networks, includes receiving, at a network layer (250, figure 2) of a protocol stack of a mobile computing device 105 comprising two or more communications interfaces 110, 115 , one or more data packets from an application (205, 210, 215, 220) executing on the mobile computing device 105, wherein the two or more communication interfaces comprise a cellular communication interface 110 and a wireless network interface 115; identifying, at the network layer upon receiving the data packet, one or more rules that specify at least one of a plurality of networks to utilize to transmit the data packet, based on the one or more rules, selecting, in the network layer, a communication interface from the two or more communications interfaces associated with the at least one of the plurality of networks for transmitting the one or more data packets. The rules are comprised of a bandwidth on the interface, the time and the cost to send the packet, an estimated delay, required power consumption, bandwidth quota remaining with a service provider, exclusion of specific times and dates, battery life, an estimated time and transmission cost per byte. Step (320, figure 3) determines which network interface to use to transmit the data packet based on routing table and constraints.
