A vehicle control system comprises a plurality of speed control systems, such low speed progress control 12, cruise control 16, hill decent control 12HD, each operable to cause the vehicle to operate in accordance with a respective target speed. In operation one of the speed control systems, e.g. cruise control 16, may be selected to control vehicle speed at a given moment in time, wherein when responsibility for speed control is transferred from cruise control 16 to, for example, low speed progress control 12, the low speed progress control 12 is operable to set a value of target speed thereof to a value corresponding to that of the target speed of the cruise control 16. The low speed progress control 12 operates in dependence on a type of terrain, e.g. grass, gravel, snow, ice etc, in which the vehicle is operating and receives inputs from a gearbox 124, a braking system 33and an accelerator pedal 161. Human machine interfaces (HMI) 18, 20, 20HD are provided so that a user may input the target vehicle speed. Also claimed is a method of controlling a vehicle. |
