In a process and apparatus for the treatment of molten carbon-containing metal the latter is fed as a freely falling flow to a reaction vessel wherein the stream is shattered by a flow of oxidizing gas; the metal is collected in the vessel, from which gas is extracted so that air is drawn into burn the carbon monoxide resulting from oxidation of the carbon. By this means it is possible to effect melting of scrap or of pre-reduced pellets, which may be charged to the vessel either before or during treatment of the molten metal. As shown in Fig. 1, metal is discharged from tundish 3 having circular discharge nozzle 4 into reaction vessel 5 having a gas offtake 8 and air inlet 20. The stream of metal is shattered by the action of jets of oxidizing gas from nozzles 15 while fluxes may be discharged from manifold 17 through outlets 19 as a curtain surrounding the stream of metal. In the modification of Fig. 3 (not shown) the metal is fed to the reaction vessel as a stream of rectangular or elliptical cross-section in which the major dimension is several times greater than the minor. The process may be operated as a single stage refining; alternatively the metal may be subjected to a second treatment of the same type or may be subsequently lanced with oxygen in a L. D. converter. In the spray refining process the metal, when collected in the reaction vessel, may be agitated as by rotation of the vessel.</p> |
