摘要 <P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an illuminator capable of making a projection image brighter than an illuminator that includes a single solid light source device, and of stabilizing the color balance of illumination light better than an illuminator that includes a solid light source device which respectively differs from one colored light to another. <P>SOLUTION: The illuminator 100 includes a prism-type PBS 40, having a polarization separation surface 42 through which a light made up of a p-polarized component passes and which reflects a light made up of a s-polarized component; a first light source unit 10, which include a first solid light source device 20 having a first solid light source and a first fluorescent layer and a first collimating optical system 30 and which is arranged to face a predetermined surface s1 in the prism-type PBS 40; and a second light source unit 50, which includes a second solid light source device 60, having a second solid light source and a second collimating optical system 70 and which is arranged to face a surface s2.
