The inverse of information coupled to electrodes 70 and 80 of gas-filled cells 30 of a first display panel 20 is coupled to electrodes 70<SP>1</SP> and 80<SP>1</SP> of the cells 30<SP>1</SP> of a second display panel 20<SP>1</SP> so that when selected cells in the first panel are caused to glow, the corresponding cells in the second panel do not glow and vice versa. As shown, driver circuits 100 and 110 supplying the row electrodes 70 and column electrodes 80 respectively of panel 20 are connected through inverters to the row electrodes 70<SP>1</SP> and column electrodes 80<SP>1</SP> of panel 201. The impedance seen by a driver circuit is thus balanced irrespective of the number of cells of the first panel which are selected. A source 112 of sustaining voltage is connected to all cells.
