<p>A membrane which is permeable by the solvent but impervious to the dissolved matter is used as division between two chambers in a cell which each have liquid feed and discharge pipes. The liquid whose concentration is to be changed flows through one chamber and a liquid of different concentration, and solvent activity, flows through the other along the other face of the membrane. By varying the pressure differential between the two chambers the direction of flow of solvent molecules through the membrane can be reversed and means of regulating and controlling the pressure differential are provided.</p> |
