The present invention relates to a black box system for vehicles using smartphone and a controlling method thereof. The controlling method of black box system for vehicles using smartphone comprises the following steps: initiating a black box application for smartphone using a controller; collecting location and time information of a vehicle using a GPS unit equipped on a smartphone; computing speed differences of a vehicle using the controller based on the collected time and location information; determining if the computer speed differences are equal to or bigger than a predetermined reference value; determining there is an accident if the computed speed difference is equal to or bigger than the predetermined reference value; and storing a video on the accident of the timing before and after using the controller if an accident is occurred. By using the present invention, causes of an accident can be found using smartphone as a black box system and by storing a video. Also, only a video right before and after an accident is stored, so that memory of a smartphone can be saved, and purchasing an expensive black box is unnecessary.
