The circuit breaker (1) has a base plate (2) with a pair of contact blades (4A,4B) and a pair of contact springs (6A,6B) that are arranged swingably. One of the two pairs of contact springs or contact blades is pivoted, so contact springs and the contact blades are brought into engagement or out of engagement. A drive unit (8) is provided for pivoting the pivoting pair of contact springs or contact blades is a drive unit. A piston and cylinder assembly (15) is arranged above the drive unit for pivoting the contact springs and the contact blades by extension of a piston (15A).
