The cooler has a control system for controlling water supply at an exit of an engine (2) to modify a water flow in an oil/water heat exchanger (3) according to measured values of a temperature of water in the engine and a temperature of oil in a gear box (1). The oil/water heat exchanger is integrated in the gear box. Two temperature sensors measure the temperature of the water in a cooling system of the engine and the temperature of the oil in the gear box, respectively. An on-board controller is connected to the two temperature sensors. An independent claim is also included for a method for cooling a gear box of an engine of a car.
