The apparatus (2) has a stop device (8) defining a vertical stop surface (9) to stop sheets for stacking the sheets along the stop surface. The stop surface has an upper limit (12), and a separator (14) is moved between a disengaged position away from a stack of sheets (6) and an engaged position into the stack of sheets. The separator is moved between the disengaged and engaged positions through the stop surface by passing under the upper limit. The separator is moved vertically upwards from the engaged position towards top position for releasing the sheets located under the separator.
