Disclosed is an AC excited synchronous generator capable of compensating changes in rated voltage according to a load. According to one embodiment of the present invention, provided is the AC excited synchronous generator comprising a main generator, an exciter, and a bidirectional power converter. The main generator comprises a main generator stator in which an armature winding generating three phase AC power is wound and a main generator rotor in which a field winding generating a magnetic field by receiving DC is wound. The exciter comprises an exciter rotor and an exciter stator. The exciter rotor in which the armature winding outputting field current required for the main generator is wound is positioned on an axis which is the same as the main generator rotor. The exciter stator forms a multipole magnetic field. The bidirectional power converter is positioned on the axis which is the same as the main generator rotor and supplies AC generated in the armature winding to the field winding of the main generator by converting the AC into the DC according to an external control signal.
