PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To favorably prevent damage to a solid polymer electrolyte membrane with a simple and economical configuration.SOLUTION: A membrane electrode assembly 10 includes: an MEA-forming section 10a having a cathode electrode 20 and an anode electrode 22 that sandwich a solid polymer electrolyte membrane 18 therebetween; and a resin frame member 24 that surrounds the MEA-forming section 10a and is joined to the same. An adhesive layer 26 is provided between an inner peripheral protrusion 24a of the resin frame member 24 and an outer peripheral edge 18be of the solid polymer electrolyte membrane 18 that extends outward from an outer peripheral end of a second gas diffusion layer 22b. The adhesive layer 26 has an overlapping portion 26a that overlaps an outer peripheral end edge of the second gas diffusion layer 22b.
