In order to provide a wire rod for taper faced compression rings with which the run-in surface (contact surface) can be formed uniformly and rapidly in a taper faced compression ring manufacturing process, the wire rod has a configuration wherein: the surface to become the outer circumferential surface of the ring has a first taper section and a second taper section that are adjacent to each other and inclined toward the outer circumference; the angle of inclination (theta2) of the second taper section is larger than the angle of inclination (theta1) of the first taper section; and the outer circumferential edge of the second taper section protrudes 0.005-0.05 mm to the outer circumferential side of the outer circumferential edge of the first taper section. In order to provide a taper faced compression ring with a long service life that reduces friction and also leads to improved fuel efficiency, the taper faced compression ring is manufactured from said wire rod and has a configuration wherein: the second taper section has a lapping surface; and the lapping surface protrudes 0.001-0.048 mm in the radial direction past the outer circumferential edge of the first taper section. |
