1311177 Jointing CONTINENTAL CAN CO Ltd 7 Sept 1970 [15 Sept 1969] 42731/70 Heading B3V [Also in Divisions B5 and B8] A container closure 11 is sealed to a container body 10, e.g. a can by applying a heat softenable bonding agent 20 to a peripheral portion of either the closure 11 or body 10, placing the closure 11 on to the body 10, applying ultrasonic vibrations to the container assembly to soften the bonding agent and allowing the bonding agent to harden. The closure and/or body may be made of metal, e.g. aluminium, steel or plastics material and the closure may be of plastics matorial with a metal peripheral portion. The bonding agent 20 may be located in a closure channel 19 as shown, in a body channel or retained on a flange, shoulder or the plain walls of the closure or body. The bonding agent may be a synthetic organic resin and many examples of suitable thermoplastic and thermosetting resins are given. The inner surface 22 of the closure, may be provided with an enamel coating 23. The skirt 17 of the channel 19 may be hemmed. The body wall 13 may be outwardly flared at its open mouth and may have its upper edge 14 and side surface adjacent thereof chiselled, ridged, serrated or knurled. |
