The present invention provides a system for searching images based on a car number and a method for operating the same, which is capable of photographing predetermined areas and detecting a car number from a car sensed from the acquired images, partially recognizing car numbers in a time zone in which there are many operations for number recognition and completely detecting the car numbers in a time zone in which there are a small number of operations for number recognition, thereby accurately detecting a car number from images acquired by a plurality of imaging devices using a small number of number recognition modules, assigning previously detected car numbers to cars traveling on first-in first-out sections without separate operations for detecting car numbers, thereby minimizing computational load caused by an increase of the amount of operations and matching information about the detected car numbers and image information to store the matched information, thereby easily searching images based on the car numbers.
