The present invention relates to a device and a method of a cooler or a heater for automatically controlling air volume by including a sensor sensing the existence of men and distance thereto. The device is installed in a cooler or a heater and includes at least one distance-sensing sensor detecting whether or not a man is near the cooler or heater and the distance thereto; a controller connected to at least one distance-sensing sensor, automatically turning on the cooler or heater when a man is near the cooler or heater, automatically controlling air volume to be stronger or weaker according to the distance, and turning down it when a man is not near the cooler or heater; and a fan-operating part which is connected to the controller, operates a fan according to the set rpm of a motor according to the existence of men and the distance thereto so that strong, moderate, or light wind is generated when a key control part receives input or the fan-operating part operates under an automatic mode. The device automatically turns on or off the cooler or the heater according to the existence of men without key control by a user under an automatic mode, provides strong, moderate, or light wind according to a distance between the heater or cooler and the men, and reduces powder consumption of the cooler or the heater.
