A method for providing an eco-driving index to evaluate the standard of eco-driving which reduces harmful gas discharge and saves fuel when driving vehicles. The prevent inventions, the method for providing the eco-driving index is performed in a vehicle system having a memory which saves the standard of fuel efficiency including fuel efficiency data for each driving speed when driving the vehicles. First, (a) calculating the average driving speed, driving fuel consumption, speed, and operation time of the vehicle to determine the standard fuel consumption expected when driving the vehicle at constant average driving speed during the operation time based on the standard of fuel efficiency; (b) determine the eco-driving index based on the standard fuel consumption and driving fuel consumption; (c) last of all, displaying the eco-driving index on a display device.
