1337258 Adjustable beds STAFFORD PATENTS & HOLDINGS Ltd 22 Dec 1970 [29 Dec 1969 2 March 1970| 63107/69 and 9912/70 Heading A4J A bed frame providing for lifting and tilting of the mattress comprises a platform 1, 2 with rollers or other means slidably engaging uprights 4..7 of a supporting frame 8..11, the platform being suspended from the uprights by a flexible member or members passing beneath it, being raised or lowered by operating means which alter the effective length of the flexible member(s), and being tiltable by a second operating means. An adjustable head-rest may be provided, and may be operatively connected to the tilting means. In one form, a tape is attached to the top of each upright of the frame and wound on a roller mounted on the platform and guided in the upright. In the form shown in plan in Fig.1, the tapes 28 at the head end of the bed pass under pulleys at the corners of the platform and then round guides 30, 31 and pulley 33 to an anchorage 34, all on the underside of the platform, and the tapes 29 at the foot pass round guides 35, 36 to the pulley 33 and anchorage 34. The pulley 33 is carried by the piston-rod of a hydraulic actuator 42, worked by a hand or foot pump, whereby the effective length of all the tapes is simultaneously altered to lift or lower the platform. The guides 36 for the foot-end tapes are carried by a member 37 actuated by screwed shaft 39 with handle 41, to lift and lower the foot of the platform only, to tilt it. The raising and tilting mechanisms described may be replaced by electrically-driven mechanisms The mattress base-board (which rests on the platform) has a head-end section 48, Fig.7, hinged to the main part 46 and raised by extensible arms 55 hinged to the head section at 51 and rigid with a shaft 60 actuated by cable 62 fixed to the base-board 46 and wound on a shaft 64 by a handle 65: the cable thus simultaneously raises the head section 48 and moves the part 46 to the left. The member 37, Fig.1, may also be connected, for example by cable 66, Fig.7, to the head-rest mechanism so that the foot of the bed is lifted as the head-rest is raised. In another embodiment, Figs.8 and 9 (not shown), the suspending tapes (90) pass over guides (81, 82) on a sub-frame (87) to anchorage on the platform, the sub-frame being slidable on the underside of the platform by a screwed shaft (84) with a handle (86) to vary the effective length of all the tapes and the anchorage of the foot-end tapes comprising a shaft on which these tapes can be wound to tilt the platform. In place of the mechanically-operated head-rest, a handoperated rest 97, Fig. 10, with a pair of supporting arms 98, 99 lockably pivoted to it at each side and slidably engaging the head-end uprights at 100, may be provided. |
