The purpose of the present invention is to provide a substrate for an optical film, having interference stripes and image quality deterioration not detected by human eyes; an optical film; a polarizing plate; a liquid crystal panel; and an image display device. To solve the problem, the substrate (20) for an optical film according to one embodiment of the present invention is used for an optical film (10) and a first functional layer (30) constituting part of the optical film (10) is installed on one surface of the substrate. The substrate for an optical film has an irregular surface (20A) constituting the surface of the first functional layer (30) and satisfies the relation that θa>tan-1(0.0013/nf) or θmax<tan-1(0.0087/¦nc-nf¦) wherein θa represents the average angle of inclination of the irregular surface (20A), θmax represents the maximal angle of inclination of the irregular surface (20A), nc represents a refractive index of the part (20B) constituting the irregular surface (20A) in the substrate (20) for an optical film, and nf (nc≠nf) represents the refractive index of the first functional layer (30). |
