Triacetyl acetic acid esters, in which R represents a saturated, branched or unbranched monovalent aliphatic or araliphatic radical (1-8C), specifically, triacetyl-acetic acid methyl, ethyl, 2-ethylhexyl benzyl and methylbenzyl esters are prepared by reacting an acetoacetic acid ester or a diacetyl-acetic acid ester with ketene at between -50‹ C. to 200‹ C. Catalysts such as alkali metal salts of organic acids or alcohols, and tertiary amines may be used, and the reaction may be discontinuous or continuous in an inert solvent. |
