<p>A homogeneous, pure, ferrous product is made from scrap steel containing ferrous metal, organic impurities, vaporizable & slag-forming metallic impurities. They are treated counter-currently in a calcining zone (1), a vaporization zone (2) and a refining zone (3) in which a partially combustible fuel-oxygen mixture is burned. Additional oxygen is introduced into (2) and (1) to increase oxidation, of the organic impurities. The temp. and oxygen concentration in (3) are controlled by adjusting the feed rate of the fuel-oxygen mixture to form a melt which is withdrawn as refined product.</p> |
