Quaternary alkyl insec Cpds. of formula (I) where R2, R3, R4 and R5 = (1-6C) alkyl R = O.S, SO or SO2, Z and Z1 = H or a C=C bond (if none of R3, R4 and R6 are quaternary) and R1 = H, (1-12C) alkyl, (4-8C) cycloalkyl) (7-12C) aralkyl -(CH2)r or -(CH2)r where R = 0 or 1, X = hal, Y = (1-6C) alkyl, (2-6C) alkenyl, (1-6C) O-alkyl NO2, CN, CH2 hal, CH (hal)2 C(hal)3, (1-6C) S:alkyl, (1-6C) SO alkyl, or (1-6C) SO2-alkyl; p = 0-5; q = 0-3; p+q = 1-5, and R6 = H, (1-6C) alkyl, (4-8C) cycloalkyl, (7-12C) aralkyl, or (1-6C) O-alkyl, are of use as insecticides, perfumery chemicals and intermediates, and polymer crosslinking agents. I are prepd. by condensing the ketone R3R6R5C(CH2)nCOR2 with a dialkylphosphonate carbon ion from (R7O)2POCH2COR7 (R7 = alkyl) reductive fission of the ester, and subsequent introduction of RR1-as required.
