Bananas are packaged for prolonged storage in a perforated package of plastic film material by placing green harvested bananas before the beginning of the critical stage of the gas development in a perforated packaging cover and closing the package on all sides, the wt. of the packaged bananas and the fruit development depending on the time of year being so arranged in a definite ratio to the number and size of the perforations in the packaging cover that an almost stable equilibrium with an O2 content of 6% and a CO2 content of 6-8% is obtained as atmosphere in the internal space of the packaging cover as a result of the gas exchange of the bananas and the gas release via the perforations. Rotting of bananas is avoided.
