PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To surely suppress abnormal combustion in spite of response delay of control for suppressing the abnormal combustion. SOLUTION: A control device for an engine includes: a suppression means (for instance, a valve timing control means 71) to change a predetermined control amount influencing occurrence of abnormal combustion in an abnormal combustion risk region PA nearer to low rotation and high load; and a prediction means 73 to predict transition of the operating condition of the engine to the abnormal combustion risk region PA by decrease of the rotation speed based on the condition change of an automatic transmission 30. When the transition to the abnormal combustion risk region PA is predicted by the prediction means 73, the suppression means (71) starts control to change the predetermined control amount (for instance, the closing time of an intake valve 9) before actual transition to the abnormal combustion risk region PA.
